There are three main reasons why many of us still falter in grammar:
1) The sentence patterns in our mother tongues are different from the sentence patterns in English.
a) In our mother tongues, the subject in a sentence, does not agree with the verb, whereas in English the subject has to agree with the verb (and there are so many verbs to remember) for example: He plays, she plays, they play, I play
b) In Mandarin and Malay, there is only the present tense (Tamil uses some tenses) whereas in English there are many other tenses such as: Past Tense, Past Perfect, Continuous and Future Tenses. For example: He played, she had been playing, they were playing, I will be playing.
c) Many of us also seldom read English books and newspapers, therefore, we miss the opportunity of fixing these English sentence patterns firmly in our minds.
2) We translate directly from our mother tongues into English, for example
Che Li Yu = Down here have. Then we speak and write Singlish not English.
3) Many of us also assume that because most people around us speak and write English in a certain way, that they must be correct. But they may not be.
