  • "He is effective because he is able to make the subject simple and give many illustrations.” "Mr Raja is very humorous, interesting and knowledgeable.” “Mr Raja is an excellent trainer with a wealth of experience and knowledge." - course participants

There is a simple, step-by-step and systematic approach to writing reports, proposals and staff papers, brilliantly every time; and you’ll learn how to write them, in our course, even if you have never written a single one in your life.

The alternative is to learn how to write reports by trial and error; which might take years.

As executives, few things command more respect from our bosses than our ability to write and present our thoughts systematically and persuasively, especially when we write reports, proposals or put up staff papers.

In the army, when our bosses do not read our reports in detail staff officers are proudest; but only skim through our recommendations and say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. This shows their confidence in our abilities to study a situation thoroughly and systematically and make accurate recommendations. Needless to say, it may take lots of brilliant reports written over many years to achieve this enviable standard.

As executives, with our goal to get into ‘Management’, what separates the men from the boys (ladies, please pardon the expression, I mean ‘the children from the adults’ of course), is the ability to write excellent reports and papers.

At the end of the course, you are able to understand:

    • The 10 types of reports and their formats
    • The language for Report Writing
    • How to write Form, Memo, Event, Periodical Reports
    • How to write Concept Papers
    • How to write Progress Reports
    • How to write Investigative Reports
    • How to write Proposals
    • How to write Staff Papers

For explanations on the different types of reports, read below.

Bonus Value: You may ask any question on writing reports by email, for 6 months after the course. The trainer will reply to you within a day or two.

    What are Concept Papers?

Sometimes it is necessary to carryout a preliminary study of a subject before embarking on a detailed study and proposal. A Concept Paper serves to convince a decision-maker on the need for the proposal. A Concept Paper may also be written on the instruction of a decision maker who wants to explore a subject before investing time and effort in putting up a formal proposal.

    What are Progressive Reports?

Progressive reports refer to periodic reports that need to be submitted on a regular basis for example on new employees, departments or work projects.

    What are Investigative Reports?

Investigative reports are step-by-step analysis of a problem that has occurred, or which keeps occurring, to determine the causes and to recommend solutions. The subjects investigated could be anything from poor sales to why staff tend to take MCs on Mondays.

    What are Proposals?

Proposals are reports suggesting something that management or department would like to be implemented. The reports usually show the reasons for the proposal, how it was analysed, and why and when it should be implemented. Typical subjects for proposals include new procedures, revision of established procedures and new methods or even introduction of machinery or software.

    What are Staff Papers?

When a detailed proposal has to be written, it is termed a 'Staff Paper'. Staff Papers usually require research and are on serious matters such as a proposal to begin a new department or branch, to relocate or to revise pay scales and so on. Staff Papers are usually much longer than the other kinds of reports.

  • K Rajamanikam (Raja)

In my 2-day course, I am going to cover everything important I learned and used about report writing, from my 10 years service as a staff officer in the army and more than 16 years as a trainer in Business Communication.

I am convinced that nowhere else, other than the SAF, do we write so many reports. It is just part of the culture that even junior officers have to learn to ‘put up papers’. As a result we become ‘experts’.

I will cover the following in enough detail; so that you do not ever have to attend another course on the subject.

I will guide you step by step on how to write the different types of reports.Relax! Even if you walk in as a beginner, you will walk out as an expert.
